Paul Winkelmans is a Toronto-based baritone who works as both a professional soloist and chorister originally from Victoria, BC. He is a graduate of McGill University, University of Manitoba, and the Victoria Conservatory of Music’s voice studies programs.
Opera credits include Schaunard in Puccini’s La Boheme (Fraser Lyric Opera), Aeneas in the double bill of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas/Rolfe’s Aeneas and Dido (Manitoba Underground Opera), Leporello in Mozart’s Don Giovanni (Manitoba Underground Opera), Des Grieux in Massenet’s Le portrait de Manon (Opera McGill), both Frank and Frosch in Strauss’s Die Fledermaus (Opera McGill), and Papageno in The Magic Flute (Manitoba Underground Opera).
In concert, he has performed as the bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah (Via Choralis), Haydn’s The Creation (Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra), Fauré’s Requiem (Elmer Iseler Singers), Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs (St. Michael’s Schola Cantorum), and Mozart’s Requiem (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra).
A recent position as the Interim Director of Music at Lawrence Park Community Church saw his conducting debut with a performance of Handel’s Brockes-Passion, which he adapted with into a reduced version in English and German.
Paul currently works as a freelance singer in Toronto, ON. He is currently singing as a baritone with the Elmer Iseler Singers, the Toronto Festival Singers, the Toronto Mendelssohn Singers, and as a soloist at Lawrence Park Community Church. He also works as an associate bookkeeper with Young Associates and is the manager of the Pacific Baroque Festival in Victoria.
